Annotation text from the Salem Witch Trials: Restoring Justice exhibition:
Mary Esty submitted this heroic, emotional petition to the newly appointed Massachusetts Bay Colony governor William Phips, the court, and ministers to ask them to reconsider the truthfulness of the accusations of the afflicted and to beg that no more innocent blood be shed. Reportedly, many in the audience wept as Mary said her farewell to family and friends, the last words she spoke from the gallows on September 22.
