Harmful Language Statement

The Phillips Library is correcting the use of harmful, racist, and derogatory language in our catalog and finding aids. Through ongoing dialogue with communities, scholars, and others, we are actively working to respectfully describe, center, and amplify diverse voices and experiences within our collection. This includes revising policies, implementing new practices, and updating subject headings. We invite you to view our subject headings work here and encourage you to contact us via our feedback form if you encounter harmful or inaccurate language while exploring our collections.

Statement on Indigenous Materials

The Phillips Library is committed to the respectful stewardship of all materials in our collection. Accordingly, the Phillips Library adheres to the Protocols for Native American Archival Material while managing material from or about Indigenous people. These protocols provide us with best professional practices for culturally responsive care and use of Indigenous archival material. The standards and goals articulated in Protocols for Native American Archival Materials are meant to inspire and foster mutual respect and reciprocity, and they include recommendations for non-tribal libraries and archives as well as Native American communities. The Phillips Library recognizes that the communities represented in the material have primary rights for all items that are culturally affiliated with them--rights which apply to, but are not limited to, issues of collection, preservation, description, access and use, and restriction of these materials.

Archival arrangement, description, access, and restriction decisions are sometimes made by individuals unfamiliar with the language and cultures represented in the materials, and as such, are subject to error.  We welcome all input from the communities represented in our collection. Please reach out to us if you feel there is an error in description, access, or restriction.
