Annotation text from the Salem Witch Trials: Restoring Justice exhibition:
Mary English presented testimony against her accuser Mary Warren, the servant of John and Elizabeth Proctor. Although Warren claimed affliction and accused many of witchcraft, she later stated she and others “dissembled,” suggesting guilt surrounding a group deception or pretense. English recorded statements Warren made in jail that undermined Warren’s accusations and called her credibility into question. It is possible English wrote and signed this document with her own hand, a rare act for a 17th-century woman.
