Annotation text from the Salem Witch Trials: Restoring Justice exhibition:
Magistrates John Hathorne and Jonathan Corwin issued this warrant on April 30 following the complaint of Captain Jonathan Walcott Sr. and Thomas Putnam on behalf of six afflicted girls who accused Philip English and two women from Beverly of witchcraft.
Essex County marshal George Herrick reported on May 2 they had apprehended two Beverly women, but Philip had not been located. Fearing arrest, English fled to Boston, hiding in the home of a business contact. He was eventually located, imprisoned, and examined. In August, Philip and Mary English escaped to New York to wait for the crisis to pass.
