Annotation text from the Salem Witch Trials: Restoring Justice exhibition:
Prisoners were held in the Salem jail or sent to Ipswich, Boston, and Cambridge due to space constraints. While incarcerated, prisoners’ families had to pay for their food and necessities and also bore the cost of transportation to visit them in jail and attend the trials. When the trials ended, several of the accused remained in jail because of their family’s inability to pay their debts. Over the course of the trials, four adults and one infant died in prison.
