Annotation text from the Salem Witch Trials: Restoring Justice exhibition:
In the aftermath of the first legal act of exoneration shown in "An act to reverse the attainders of George Burroughs, et al. for witchcraft," this document records monetary payments for damages to dozens of surviving victims and family members through November 1712. In its introductory passage, the restitution committee's phrase “what they Suffered in their Estates at that Sorrowfull time” is hauntingly similar to Philip English’s words in his 1710 petition. Even so, English would not receive reparations until late in 1718, six and a half years later.
