- Description
- The commonplace book of this British sailor contains numerous essays, sea songs, poetry, comments on voyages and travels he made, and information on the British Royal Navy. The essays cover a wide range of subjects, including geometry, trigonometry, astronomy, and navigation. Tiffin comments on voyages he made aboard the packet ship Eagle, the Royal Duke, the H.M.S. Tavistock, and other unnamed ships to India; to Halifax, Nova Scotia; from Jamaica, West Indies to Boston; and through the East Indies. No personal information is known about Tiffin, but this English sailor's writings make clear he was well educated, and the book contains some information on Great Britain's naval history in the 18th century. The book is copiously illustrated with 78 watercolor paintings of vessels, places, buildings, and land profiles from sea.
