Misses Rebecca & Martha Usher Bar Mills Hollis Maine Single letter} [wax seal residue] [Page 2] Portland Dec. 17th, 1844 Mr dear Friends Rebecca & Martha, A leisure moment in the city affords me the opportunity of scribbling a line or two by way of explanation or apology for the dissappointment I must have occassioned, to say nothing of the trouble I must given yourselves & brothers by defering my intended visit to "Moderation Mill" on Saturday afternoon last. & which between ourselves, I had no particular desire to speak there beyond the hope of alienating some few disinterested minds from the inefficient plan of Liberty Party iring[?] slaveholders into emancupation of their slaves, I should have made good my appointment. but on arriving in Gorham I am surprised to learn the success with our friend J.M. Spear to go into Portland & meet with the Sewing Circle. & on the first evening of our meeting in Gorham this scene opened truly rich & encouraging, some three Orthodox deacons taking the field for the Church and against us. & on Saturday large calculations are made upon a large and exciting meeting from the challenge given for untrammelled debate, But to our surprise every means was rsovled [resolved?] to keep the people away. and
