- Description
- A petition by Essex County ministers to the general government of Massachusetts recommending that actions be taken to clear the reputations of those falsely accused of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials (Rosenthal 878).
Annotation text from the Salem Witch Trials: Restoring Justice exhibition:
More than a decade after the conclusion of the trials, 12 ministers from communities devastated by the tragedy petitioned the Massachusetts Bay government to do something public “to clear the good name and reputation of some who have suffered . . . against whom there was not . . . sufficient evidence to prove the guilt of such a crime.” Joseph Green, the second in the left column of signatures, took over as Salem Village minister upon the Reverend Samuel Parris’s 1696 departure. It is not known why Nicholas Noyes and John Higginson Sr., ministers in Salem Town, did not sign this petition.
