Annotation text from the Salem Witch Trials: Restoring Justice exhibition:
This petition is a brief statement of support from 13 of the couple’s Salem neighbors. The list includes George Locker, the constable who arrested Sarah Good, and James Holton, who the Proctors allegedly afflicted. A portion of the document is cut away. It may have included a second column of petitioners’ names.
In spite of these defenders stating that “we never heard or understood that they were ever suspected to be guilty of the crime now charged upon them,” the court ruled that the Proctors were guilty.
