Annotation text from the Salem Witch Trials: Restoring Justice exhibition:
This petition is formal, complex, and religiously oriented. It attempts to remind the Court of Assistants in Boston of a key point of debate during the trials: that the devil could impersonate an innocent person. The Reverend John Wise of Chebacco Parish (now Essex) probably wrote this text. Look to the list of signatures: his name appears first and is the largest, written in the same ink as the body of the document.
