- Upon her hire in 1807 as probably the first Black teacher in Salem, Chloe Minns could read, but not write. In the 1808 receipt in this collection (see Related Item links below), Minns made only a mark, but in this 1810 receipt, she signed her own name. During her 16-year teaching career, she instilled in hundreds of students that same desire for self-improvement. In 1817, Minns married and changed her full name to Clarissa Lawrence, the name seen in the related item "List of the scholars belonging to C. Lawrence's School, February 1, 1822" (see link below).
