Anna B. Shepley Omori Papers
Anna Omori (born Anna Barrows Shepley) was an American portrait painter, children's book illustrator, and translator who married Hyoso Omori of Japan in 1907. Following her marriage, she moved to her husband's native country of Japan, where she lived until her death in 1943. This digital collection is chiefly comprised of correspondence written by Omori and sent to her friend Bella Williams of Boston, Massachusetts. This correspondence covers over four decades and deals with geopolitical events; day-to-day life in Japan; Omori's travels to Europe and the United States; and other matters. Also included are transcriptions of Omori's correspondence with other individuals; a pamphlet relating to Yurin En, a settlement house in Tokyo founded by Omori and her husband; a transcription of Omori's translation of Murasaki Shikibu's court diaries; and a photograph of Anna and Hyoso.
