Charles G. Lewis
Charles G. Lewis (1865-1932) was a medical missionary in China for 36 years. This small collection of 9 letters and 20 photographs dates from 1896 to 1900, the start of his time in Tengchowfu [Penglai], Tsinanfu [Jinan], and Tsiningchow [Jining]. The letters mention his travels, description of people and their diet, religion and superstitions, diseases, as well as his medical and missionary activities. The Boxer Rebellion is mentioned, as is opium use. In 1902, Lewis moved to Patingfu [Baoding] for the remainder of his career.
