Edwin Vernon Morgan Journals
The journals of the U.S. diplomat, Edwin Vernon Morgan, deal with his diplomatic career and personal life during the years of 1899 to 1901, 1904 to 1905, and 1926. The journals contain a combination of diplomatic and political insights on events in Asia during this period, as well as Morgan's leisure activities, including races, dinners, and concerts. Various letters, photographs, and assorted ephemera were tucked or pasted into the journal, covering a wide range of subjects.
Currently five of the seven journals held by the Phillips Library have been digitized. The journals digitized deal with Morgan's experience in Korea, first as secretary to the U.S. Legation in 1899 and 1900 and then as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary in 1904. They were written prior to the Japanese annexation of Korea in 1910, but during a time of increasing Japanese control over the country.
