Joseph & Joshua Grafton Papers
Joseph Grafton, Jr (1726-) and his cousin Joshua Grafton operated a mercantile firm out of Salem, Massachusetts and Havana, Cuba, doing business during the Revolutionary War and the late 18th century. After the revolution, their ships were employed in the slave trade. These papers largely relate to a voyage of the brig Gambia, captained by Robert Champlin. The Gambia sailed from Salem to the Coast Africa to Charleston, South Carolina, back to Salem in 1784 and 1785, carrying a cargo of enslaved people from Africa to Charleston.
The collection also contains various shipping papers dated from 1765 to 1792.
