Mary Abigail Dodge Papers
Mary Abigail Dodge (1833-1896), or "Gail Hamilton," the pen name under which she wrote, was an essayist, editor, abolitionist, and strong supporter of women's independence. She was born in Hamilton, Massachusetts, and was a graduate and then teacher at Ipswich Female Seminary. She made numerous contributions to the Atlantic Monthly, The Congregationalist, the Independent, and other journals. In company with James G. Blaines--a Republican leader, Speaker of the House, and relative of Dodge--Dodge mixed in important political and literary circles in Washington, D.C., and was able to exert her strong political views about the status of women.
